Look up Self-Counsel Press and favorite-it. Then order Manage Your Online Reputation by Tony Wilson.
Self-Counsel Press is a division of International Self-Counsel Press Ltd. (same link as above) and has offices in the US and Canada. This book, however, is pertinent for anyone in the world.
The subtitle I’ve chosen today is taken directly from the book… and it’s *so very important* that we remember … things DO change. It’s the one thing we can count on in this life!
This may be one of the most important books I mention for my fellow-bloggers and online gurus of everything from beauty to education to self-help to… well, anything.
Reading through this book is for you if you wonder how to protect your brand or your company’s reputation… or if you’re a parent wanting to protect your child.
It’s a tremendously important book.
Now, of course there are more online sources on the subject. Thousands and thousands, actually. There are books and books and books. Here’s the thing… I picked up *this* book and it’s a good one – thankfully!
It is not an academic work but it is an educational one, written in the voice of a trusted friend.
And yes, it’s older, having been written in 2011. But that’s where the subtitle comes in. Don’t stop with this book. They suggest it in their own words.
The book is filled with examples, scenarios, case studies and tons of stuff… tons. of. stuff. And some of it, I had *no idea* about… like … metadata. Ever heard of it? It’s kind of confusing, actually.
I’ve heard of “meta-discussions,” where a certain facet of a thread is taken out of the original discussion (and possibly out of context) and discussed. An example of this might look like this:
- Original Poster: I collect tea cups and my favorite is from my mother-in-law, who collected them herself. She gave me a few sets that I love. One of the sets has a crack in it. She explained that her youngest son was serving tea to his little friend when he was around 7 years old. She didn’t scold him for breaking the cup. Instead, the repaired it together and she used it as an example of mending hearts and going on.
- Responder: Is your brother-in-law gay?
- Original Poster: What? No. Why?
- Responder: You said he was serving tea to a friend. What kind of little boy does that?
You get the idea, I’m sure. On some forums I’ve been on, meta-discussion is either discouraged or prohibited. It muddies the water.
But in the case of metadata… it’s similar… but not, too. From my understanding in the book, it is the underlying information about digital images. It’s a way of finding out the original information – the camera, the date, the computer where the photo began.
In case you’re still wondering, the word meta = data about data (according to this book). That sounds about right.
It’s a gold mine of information you need to know if you do ANYthing online. Highly recommended!
